Painting 2 - week 12 - Grisaille and distortion

A couple of exercises this week at school carry on from previous work. Tonal studies of the self portrait and the sculptural object were overpainted with thin glazes of acrylic paint with a gloss medium and water.I think the self portrait is a better likeness with some colour in it.

Tutor, Sally Duhig, demonstrated a couple of other techniques for making a  picture of a face. Cutting up pictures from magazines, dropping the sections of face and drawing them wherever they fell. There were a few upside-down eyes and noses. Another was grid-ing up the photo then distorting the grid in the drawing. Pretty girls still look pretty with big heads and big eyes but I guess we already knew that. Look at any manga comic.
